Photography has been a passion of mine since I was young, but for a long time it felt out of reach. Back then, the costs of cameras, lenses, film, and printing created a barrier. That changed in 2006 while I was stationed at Nellis Air Force Base in Las Vegas. I picked up a camera kit from an aviation photographer on base and started experimenting, slowly teaching myself the craft.

In 2007, after separating from active duty in the Air Force, I went back to college and began formal photography classes. I quickly fell in love. As part of a work-study, I ran the campus photo lab and maintained the darkroom for over a year and a half. Around that time, I moved into an apartment with a quirky half-bath in the bedroom, which I promptly converted into a full-fledged darkroom complete with enlargers for both black-and-white and color printing.

Not long after, I joined the Wisconsin Air National Guard as a photojournalist. That role brought me to the Defense Information School at Fort Meade, Maryland, where I completed the intensive four-month Basic Still Photography course and graduated as a Distinguished Honor Graduate. Over the years as a photojournalist, my work was published in multiple outlets, and my images earned several awards.

In recent years, I stepped back from photography to focus on raising my son and building my career in cybersecurity and IT. But photography has always been at the core of who I am. Today, I am relaunching my business, formerly Dynamic Photography, under my own name, Ashley Bell Photography.

This Substack is a new chapter for me. Here, I will be sharing not just my latest work, but also the stories, lessons, and perspectives I have gathered from a life spent behind the camera.
